Very hot on the farm today.

Two of us got caught by one of the guards, the other chap with an onion, myself with a daikon (Chinese Radish). He came searching our pockets, he let us off in the end with a bribe of 10 American cigarettes each plus what he took off us on the spot. Still, that was better than getting a beating up and being put in the Ice Box on return to Camp.

I might mention that it is quite common for each and everyone to get hold of anything in the way of vegetables such as onions, beans potatoes, yams, pumpkins, marrows etc, to eat, if one did not do this we would sure go hungry on the small ration of rice we get, of course there's no question of cooking these vegetables, it would be too risky, so we eat them raw, we also get hold of wild mint, wild spinach and in fact, any wild weed that we think may be edible and they all go the same way to help the rice along.

A few more fellows were beaten up by Yamnia at the farm today but we have received the good news this evening that he leaves us for good in a few days.
