29 August 1945
We haven't heard of the delegation arriving yet (1 o/c) but there is no doubt about them being expected, as a lunch of fried steaks, fish, apples, pears etc, has been prepared for them. We, on the other hand, lunched on a small loaf of bread and a portion of so called stew made from sweet potato tops.
The delegation are walking through the Camp.
The Swedish representative came through our hut but could not stay long as he was looking after the Dutch. We asked about Red + supplies, he said they had none as there was nothing in this country. Asked about the canisters that were dropped yesterday, he was rather vague but thought the planes would visit and drop something in every Camp, one definite thing he did state and that was the British Troops started taking over this Island on the 1st Sept, he did not seem to have any further information to impart.
One of the Americans who spoke to the Swiss representative confirmed the taking over of the Island. He was told on the quiet that the food was bloody, and that this was an awful Camp, in fact, the worst in Japan. He said he knew all about it, to quote his own words - He had got the low down on it - and we got the impression he would let it be known to the Allied Forces in due course. He of course was told about the beatings and bad shortage of food.
As the occupation of the Island commences on the 3rd Sept, it was thought that we would embark at Nagasaki and go straight from the train to the ship as there was no accommodation to stay the night on the shore, destination Manilla.
