5 July 1945

Quite a few incidents of stealing of cigarettes and beatings up have occurred lately with the Guards, who are the culprits. They went to the Other Ranks Hut, next to ours yesterday and turned over all kits and took away about 16 packets of American cigarettes.

Five men were caught bringing foodstuffs into Camp, they were stripped, beaten unconscious revived with water and then beaten unconscious again and put in the Ice Box (cells). This is how nice and smoothly things are run in accordance with International Law.

Had coffee for breakfast.

The New Senior Officer Wing Commander Mathews reported it and the new Officers got a beating up this evening, had all their kits turned over and a number of things taken away - razor blades, soap, cigarettes etc. This was reported this evening and a full session held but whether anything will come of it or not is a different matter.
