20 May 1945

Have heard that one very big plane visited OSAKA and dropped one very big bomb (1,000 kilos) this was followed by many smaller bombers which dropped incendiaries and that the place suffered heavily by fire etc,. This may be why a small hate has been turned on against the Officers. It has proved to be the invariable custom in the past, that, when things go against the Japanese in the way of reverses they usually vent their spite mostly against the Officers.

The latest is that the Japanese Military Police are taking over the Camp, whether this will be for the better or worse remains to be seen. They are very strict I believe, but just, and are all powerful in so far as the Army and Civilians are concerned.

The cigarettes did not materialise. Regarding the issue of Red + stores it has been decided, for the time being to issue in dribs and drabs as before, but to speed up the issues in order to get rid of them quickly owing to the definite statement that the Camp Commander, the Interpreter and others of the staff so not send requests but demands for their requirements from the supplies in hand. Further, the interpreter went to the Red + representative today and said he did not receive the same quantity as the Commander, and, although he was the Interpreter and a Civilian he ranked as an Officer and therefore was entitled to the same amounts as an Officer.
