Still at War

Still at War

28 July 1945

Sirens and Planes on the go all night. During most of the day could be heard what sounded more like a bombardment than bombs, the sirens were screaming on and off pretty well all day. This is probably what has given rise to the latest rumour which is that Korea

Sirens and planes on the go again last night and pretty well during the whole day. Did well today in having weak potato soup with both morning and evening meals, of course there were no solids in it.

Sirens and Planes on the go last night. Had potato soup with no solids again this morning. Touch wood, the new Guard, so far, seem to be more like human beings than the cruellest of animals. The Sirens were well on the go all afternoon. More potato soup this evening.

Yasume today. Roll Call and Reveille one hour later. Rice as short as ever, no stew for breakfast. The sirens were on the go again during the night. Two men by the sound of it were getting an unmerciful beating up at the Guard Room last night while we were

The inspection seems to have gone off 0kay as there have been sirens on the go all morning and at least two heavy batches of planes passed over but owing to cloud could not be seen. There was a fair amount of Ack Ack firing and heavy rumbles in the

According to what I hear there was a very heavy raid on last night so that knocks the rumour of an Armistice on the head. The rice ration is so small these days that one can feel themselves getting thinner and weaker every day. We are in the majority, just

Whether there is anything in the rumour or not regarding the Armistice there were no alarms last night. Had butter with the evening meal but no stew. This finishes up, so I believe all Red + supplies. The Colonel i/c PoW camps on the island is making an inspection tomorrow

21 July 1945

Had the last drop of unsweetened coffee for breakfast. Latest rumours: There are some Red + parcels at the station. The Japanese have asked for a 10 day Armistice counting from yesterday; there were certainly no air raids yesterday. Cheese sauce this evening and so finishes of the cheese. Got 20

20 July 1945

"The war is over" The rumour has now grown to this but such optimism was killed last night as there was a black out on. Same rumour is on the go again. The 22nd is the great day. On the 22nd she says the' Commander is leaving,

Unsweetened coffee for breakfast and jam with evening meal, this finishes the jam. Beans were mixed through the rice for all meals and were quite a welcome addition. Understand the stock of beans is sufficient to last for 12 days. Also had a fairly good vegetable stew morning and evening.

18 July 1945

The Sirens were well on the go again last night. These babies are certainly given no respite at night time. Had a few soya beans in with the rice this morning, evening also raisin stew which helped things considerably. A few fantastic rumours: the Japanese have been given an ultimatum

17 July 1945

The Sirens were on the go again last night despite the rain. Yasume today. Reveille and Roll Call one hour later. Coffee with double issue of sugar for breakfast. That's about the last of the sugar unless some more Red+ comes in. Had a small portion of meat
